Plight of Maersk Tigris Ship Is Fresh Reminder of Supply-Chain Risks

The plight of 24 crew members aboard the M/V Maersk Tigris container ship is the latest reminder of the rising risks companies face as they become more global.

In efforts to squeeze costs from their supply chains, companies have sought to reduce inventory and source from emerging markets where labor is cheaper. As their operations become more multinational, they also take steps such as consolidating ocean shipments to save money and often rely on fixed trading routes through certain choke points like the Strait of Hormuz, where the Tigris was seized.
